Project Gainful
The GAINFUL project has received Eurostar’s funding in 2021 with a top ten ranking among strong competition. The 3-year GAINFUL (Gas analyzer with intelligent interface for high volume applications) project will introduce a new sensor technology based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), for package inspection and quality control. The main goal of the GAINFUL system is to maximize the system performance and reduce the price and size of the individual components within the instrument to reach a large market volume. This will be achieved with the development of the three key components, laser diode technology by nanoplus, TDLAS platform by Norsk Elektro Optikk, gas cell by Gasporox combined into an innovative gas analyzer instrument for package inspection and quality control.
The instrument will fill a void that competitive technologies cannot compete with, by price, size, the ease of handling and robustness.
In addition, the developed compact laser analyzer will be further explored against chemical sensors used today in handheld package inspection instruments, that suffers from high maintenance and short lifetime. The aim is to launch the GAINFUL analyzer instrument as a product one year after the project has ended.
The project consortium is well chosen for this collaboration since the work areas of the individual team members complement each other, meaning that each part of the GAINFUL instrument will be developed by a market-leading company within their respective field, and with Gasporox as the project coordinator.
Project Galdi
The GALDI (Gasporox Ampoule Leak Detector Instrument) project will develop a non-destructive and non-contact laser-based instrument for 100% in-line quality inspection of pharmaceutical ampoule closure integrity. Ampoules are commonly used as a container for pharmaceutical liquids, where the drug needs to be protected from air and contaminants. To secure highest quality and safety on the packed pharmaceutical liquid, regulations require that 100% of all ampoules should undergo container closure integrity testing to reject leaking ampoules. Current leak detection method employed for real-time in-line monitoring is large, complex and slow.
The instrument developed in GALDI is based on Gasporox laser technology, which offers contact-free leak and quality testing where the drug is left unaffected after quality control. The instrument will be small and have a unique design that offers an easy integration directly on the production line with a measurement time of a few milliseconds. In contrast to current in-line methodology used within the pharmaceutical industry, i) no external high voltage is applied ii) no minimum conductivity is required of the liquid product, iii) no ozone is generated, iv) no rotation handling of the ampoule is required, and v) no problems related to ambient moisture fluctuations, which results in issues with the sensitivity, with the consequence that non-leaky ampoules are rejected and thrown away, which creates large amounts of hazardous chemical waste.
The GALDI instrument will offer 100% in-line quality control with high precision and accuracy, which means that the packaged drug will reach the customer with high quality and safety. With increased sensitivity and accuracy, the false rejection rate will be minimized, and more products will reach the market.
Technology
The GPX Porosity instrument is based on 25 years of development and refinement of industrial laser gas sensors. The combination of GASMAS (GAs in Scattering Media Absorption Spectroscopy) and TOF (Time Of Flight) sensors allows measuring the optical porosity of ribbons produced by a roller compactor in the process of the tablet production.
The laser sensor technology has been developed by Gasporox and Gasporox’s technology partner/supplier, and is used in many other industrial settings, including the petro-chemical, pharmaceutical, and energy industries.
The GASPOROX technology is already used more than 10 years very successful for the testing of parenteral drugs. It is integrated and used in machines, systems and instruments to do 100% and lab testing of vials and ampoules in many parenteral packaging lines and labs. The great performance and robustness of the measurement is well proofed in the industry.
